Custom Hemlock Mailbox with Solar House Light

Posted by Patrick Glynn on

After seeing my neighbor’s new cypress mailbox, my other neighbor Jake down the road decided it was time to upgrade his own — a weather-beaten 4x4 post that was barely holding together with a mix of screws, rocks, and wishful thinking.

I built his new mailbox from Hemlock, another strong and weather-resistant local wood. The design includes side-mounted house numbers positioned for the delivery driver’s approach and a solar light that illuminates them at night — perfect for both mail carriers and emergency responders.

The new box looks sharp on the busy intersection where Jake lives. He liked the wood and finish so much that he’s planning to use the same treatment on his porch remodel later this winter.

Fun fact: Jake just completed the first phase of a new mountain-bike trail network in Richmond, Vermont, called Maple Wind Farm Trails. We attended the farm’s fried-chicken and bluegrass event at the trail-network grand opening this September — and it was a blast!
