Saddle Trays: A Simple Solution for Couch-Arm Drinks

Posted by Patrick Glynn on

This started as a simple at-home problem. Drinks kept ending up on the end of the couch — and eventually on the couch itself. There wasn’t a good place for a mug or glass, so I built one.

These are Saddle Trays: solid wood platforms designed to sit securely over the arm of a couch and give drinks a stable place to land.

The Designs

I’m currently prototyping two versions:

  • Bridge — a longer top that spans the couch arm and offers more surface area
  • Block (aka Perch) — a more compact, solid design that feels furniture-like

Materials & Finish

All of the trays are finished the same way:

  • Finish: Satin poly tung oil
  • Woods: Walnut, Cherry, and Curly Maple

The variation you see comes entirely from the wood itself — natural color, grain, and figure — not from different finishes.

What do you think?

If you like this idea, let me know. I can make these to fit different couch arm sizes.

And if it’s not your thing, that’s useful to hear too — honest feedback is always welcome.
