Marcia brought us a beautiful raised relief map of Maine — the kind that lets you actually feel the state’s peaks, valleys, and rivers. The goal was to make the map safe and sturdy while keeping it accessible for sight and touch so family and grandkids could explore the geography hands-on.

I built a simple pine frame with Danish oil finish that holds the map securely while keeping it open and tactile. Fittingly, we used pine — a nod to Maine’s nickname, The Pine Tree State. The result highlights the contours of Mount Katahdin, Cadillac Mountain, and Maine’s lakes and rivers — a piece that feels as good as it looks.

The finished piece looks right at home in Marcia’s space.
Fun fact
The map was a $20 clearance find from Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington, VT — one of our favorite local shops. They give so much back to the outdoor community and have great new and used outdoor gear. Go check them out if you are on Church Street.
