This lamp started with two rough blocks of cherry—one for the cap and one for the stem.

Instead of using a lathe, it was shaped entirely with an angle grinder, removing wood slowly to keep the curves even.

Once the form was right, the underside of the cap was bored out to house the bulb, and the base was widened so it would sit securely on a nightstand.

After sanding, a coat of Danish oil brought the grain to life.

When the lamp is off, the cap takes on a rich, dark cherry tone. When it’s on, light glows through the underside and reveals the detail in the wood. It turned out to be the perfect bedside lamp for my daughter’s room.
